DePuy Hip Replacement

DePuy, a unit of Johnson & Johnson, is the maker of the ASR™ XL Acetabular System, a traditional hip replacement implant used world wide, and the ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System, a partial hip replacement implant. The latter is sold only outside the United States.

According to a spokeswoman for DePuy (pronounced dee pew), 93,000 of the devices have been implanted around the world.

DePuy Total Hip Replacement

In a total hip replacement, doctors replace a diseased or damaged hip with an artificial one. They use a device consisting of an artificial ball and socket to replicate the form and movement of a person’s natural hip joint.

The hip is a true ball and socket joint. The implant consists of a stem, ball, liner and socket. The stem, which is made of metal, is inserted into the patient’s femur (thigh bone) to anchor it. At the top of this stem is a fitting upon which is placed a smooth ball-shaped part. This ball fits into an artificial cup above it that is lined with a metal insert and is fitted into the person’s pelvic bone. The ball articulates within the cup, reproducing the movements of the person’s natural hip.

Problems With The ASR™ XL

Many of the problems of DePuy hip replacement systems, have to do with the acetabular cup. Surgeons have complained that the part is too shallow to properly hold the ball portion of the implant and is difficult to place surgically.

DePuy issued a statement Sept. 9, 2010, saying that more patients than expected had to have their hip implant removed and were required to have a second replacement surgically inserted, an operation called revision surgery. They quoted new data showing 12 percent of patients receiving the ASR™ Resurfacing device, and 13 percent of patients who had the total ASR™ replacement needed to go through revision surgery.

Hip implants are expected to last about 15 years, however, some DePuy hip replacements are failing within two to three years.

Symptoms of DePuy Hip Replacement Failure

The main indication of failure of the hip is pain deep in the groin. Other symptoms of problems with the implants are:

  • Problems walking
  • Increasing pain and popping sounds when walking
  • Difficulty standing when rising from a seated position
  • Swelling in the groin, lower back, and hip
  • The sensation that the hip is out of place
